Directions

The routes recommended are the best-signposted ones: inward and outward routes differ where stated.

From M1 (south) junction 21/M69 (north end)

  • Follow A563 outer ring Leicester south/east for five miles to a roundabout that joins the A6 Market Harborough road.
  • Turn left at the roundabout, signposted A6 city centre, and follow the London Road for approximately half a mile.
  • Turn right on to the A6030 (Stoughton Road) and follow until the roundabout.
  • Take the 1st left exit up Stoughton Drive into Wakerley Road.
  • Over the crown of the hill is a turning on the right. This is Gwendolen Road.
  • The main carpark for LGH is along this road on the left.

From M1 (north) junction 22/A50 Burton

  • At busy times drivers are strongly advised to follow the M1 (south) Route (see above).
  • Otherwise, follow A50 Leicester signs along dual-carriageway towards city centre.
  • Near centre A50 signs now indicate Northampton.
  • Follow A50 Northampton signs through one-way system but turn left onto Vaughan Way (A594).
  • Follow this road round over the Flyover and follow the signs for the A47.
  • Continue along Humberstone Road into Uppingham Road.
  • About three quarters of a mile from the roundabout turn right into Coleman Road (A6030). This road becomes Broad Avenue.
  • Just before the crown of a hill there is a turning on the left into Gwendolen Road.
  • The main carpark for LGH is along this road on the left.

From A6 Loughborough

  • Entry to Leicester is signalled by a short dual-carriageway, 'City of Leicester' sign, and the large Red Hill roundabout (with flyover).
  • Take the fourth exit into a 40mph dual carriage way (Abbey Lane) signposted City Centre A6.
  • Follow this road all the way to a large T Junction.
  • Bear left onto Vaughan Way and over the Burleys flyover.
  • Follow as per M1 (north) Route above.

From A46 Newark

  • Follow city centre signs along dual-carriageway (A607), flanked by many shops, and over the first flyover.
  • Then take the 1st exit from the large roundabout with a flyover over it and you are on St.Matthews Way.
  • Take the first exit to the left onto the A47 and follow as per the M1 (north) Route above.

From A47 Peterborough

  • Entry to Leicester is signalled by a long descent, followed by 'City of Leicester' sign, ascent, and 30 mph restriction.
  • Continue along the A47 (Uppingham Road) and turn left into Coleman Road.
  • Now follow as per M1(north) Route above.

From A6 Market Harborough

  • Follow A6 into city.
  • At roundabout for Leicester Racecourse continue over taking the 3rd exit.
  • Follow this for about half a mile and turn into Stoughton Road (A6030).
  • Now follow as per M1 (south) Route above.

From A50 Northampton

  • Follow A50 (Welford Road) in to Leicester until you come to a large crossroads.
  • Turn right following Leicester Racecourse signs to the roundabout.
  • Take the first exit and then follow as per M1 (south) Route.

By rail

  • Leicester lies on the London (St. Pancras)-Sheffield, the Birmingham-Nuneaton-Peterborough-Norwich and Stansted, and the Coventry-Nottingham-Lincoln lines.

Approximate journey-times and frequencies of trains are:

  • From London 75 minutes/twice an hour.
  • From Sheffield 75 minutes/every 1 1/4 hours From Birmingham 60 minutes/hourly.
  • Travellers from, for example, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Hull, York, Newcastle, Norwich, Southampton, Bristol and Cardiff can on weekdays reach Leicester before lunch and return home in the evening.
  • Leicester Station lies on the University side of the City Centre. The Leicester General Hospital is about 40 minutes walk away. It is, therefore, better to take a taxi.
