Specialist Medical Equipment Engineer (Operating Theatres)
Grade: Engineer
Reporting To: Operations Manager – Whipps Cross
Role Duration: Permanent 37.5 hours per week
Overview
Applicants will be expected to have proven electronics experience and a level of knowledge equivalent to a degree / Incorporated Engineer. Key skills required include the exercise of independent judgment in relation to repairing medical electrical equipment, carrying out planned preventative maintenance, ability to exercise initiative and prioritise own workload, an understanding of equipment safety, and the ability to work safely under pressure. Applicants should be a member of the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists or be able to obtain such registration very quickly.
Ideally qualified to BEng or equivalent in electronics and be able to clearly demonstrate considerable post qualification experience in the support of a broad range of medical equipment, be conversant with relevant legislation, the use of computerised equipment management systems and have good knowledge and understanding of modern theatre equipment, possess the ability to innovate and have a flexible approach to the introduction of change in working practice.
Purpose of the role
- To provide prompt, high quality and professional engineering support to a broad range of medical equipment included in the Managed Facility Service.
- Key skills required include repairing and servicing medical equipment, an in depth understanding of patient safety and the ability to work accurately and safely under pressure.
Key Accountabilities
- To ensure equipment is maintained correctly, ensuring patient safety
- To ensure equipment is repaired correctly, on time, first time
- Prioritise multiple demands, as required
- Carry out quality assurance, calibration and day to day maintenance of the equipment.
- Carry out corrective maintenance on equipment as required, in accordance with local policies and OEM recommendations.
- Supporting customers needs
- Ensure contractual Key Performance Indicators are met
- General duties to ensure MFS is operational
- Liaise with and assist OEMs
- Safety test loan equipment
- Keep full and accurate records of all work carried out, in accordance with Asteral procedures.
- Maintain essential stock records
- Develop service checklists and work instructions
- Carry out Acceptance Testing of equipment
- Ensure, at all times, that patient safety is safeguarded and the company reputation is maintained or enhanced
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of developments in the field of medical device technology
- Attend appropriate user, technical and other training courses, meetings and/or conferences which are related to the Asteral MFS
- Seek to gain knowledge/experience in related Biomedical Engineering fields to expand opportunities of the MFS and for personal development
- Co-ordinate the commissioning and removal from site of redundant equipment in liaison with the Remarketing team
- Provide guidance and supervision to the technical work of other Asteral engineers as appropriate
- Provide support to clinical users in operation and set up of equipment as required
- Participate in the training of Clinical staff as necessary and demonstrate the correct, safe and accurate use of medical equipment
- Assist and participate in coordinating User training as and when needed
- Participate in the operation of the computerised inventory and work recording system (Optim)
Resources / Decision Making Authority
- No budget/sign off responsibilities
- No staff reporting
Performance Indicators
- Repair of faults and resolution of technical problems within timescales required
- Ability to work with NHS and Asteral staff
- Completion of maintenance to plan
- Timeliness and accuracy of reporting data into OPTIM
- Ability to work with OEMs

Experience

Experienced in the repair, calibration and use of general medical equipment (minimum 7 years)

Specialised Medical Engineering experience in the Operating theatre environment and equipment commonly associated with this area

Experienced in the repair, calibration and use of x-ray and imaging equipment

At least 5 years experience in healthcare environment

Good working knowledge of appropriate national regulatory standards

Has attended a range of OEM or other appropriate device specific training works and is in possession of relevant certificates
